Google Maps Platform changed their service ( to require a billing account as of July 16, 2018, as announced on May 2, 2018 ( To prevent your maps service from being disabled, the Maps team attached a temporary billing account to your project.

As a result, some Firebase projects appeared to be upgraded to the Blaze plan. This was not entirely accurate, and all affected projects are still free (restricted to free Spark usage).

This temporary billing account WILL NOT generate any charges and will be removed if you use any service (Firebase or Cloud) which would incur a cost (at which time Maps APIs will become disabled for your project).

Google maps recently made a change that causes accounts to auto upgrade if Maps is enabled on a project. You will not receive any charges associated with this billing account.

We understand this is confusing. We're working with Maps to fully understand this issue and we will try to update you once we know more.
