Incident affecting Authentication

Global: SafetyNet Attestation API issue causing errors during Firebase authentication on Android devices. Issue resolved.

Incident began at 2021-10-17 15:14 and ended at 2021-10-17 16:30 (all times are US/Pacific).

The issue with SafetyNet Authentication API for Firebase authentication, has been resolved for all affected projects as of Sunday, 2021-10-17 16:24 US/Pacific.

We will publish an analysis of this incident once we have completed our internal investigation.

Summary: Global: SafetyNet Attestation API issue causing errors during Firebase authentication on Android devices. Mitigation underway.

Description: We are currently experiencing an issue with the SafetyNet Attestation API which Firebase uses to authenticate Android devices beginning, Sunday, 2021-10-17, 12:00 US/Pacific. Our Engineering teams are working to mitigate the issue.

We will provide more information by Sunday, 2021-10-17 16:30 US/Pacific.

Diagnosis: App payloads are not affected by this issue. This can continue to be trusted. Certificate verification may fail due to this error. Mitigation is underway.

Workaround: None at this time.
